As I approach the ripe old age of 60, I’m often asked by people I meet if I still work. When I say ‘yes’, I’m then asked what I do. And when I say I’m a LifeCoach the next question is sometimes: what exactly is a LifeCoach? I’m still working on my short, 30 seconds, elevator-pitch-style answer. In the meantime, here’s my slightly longer version. A lifecoach is someone who: 1. Believes in your potential and believes you can create the life you desire. 2. You can talk to openly, confidentially and without fear of judgement. 3. Helps you define – in as much detail as possible – what you want. Because when you know what you want, it’s much easier to go after it. Like driving. It’s a faster to get to where you want to go if you have an address and know which direction you’re heading in. 4. Asks questions that help you explore, understand and remove beliefs, fears and any stinking thinking that’s getting in the way of your goals or stopping you from going after your dreams. 5. Empowers you to take ownership of your life and keeps you on track and moving towards your goal, one small, manageable and achievable step at a time. As Confucious said “It does not matter how slowly you go as long as you do not stop.” Because the key to success is action. And it’s the consistent actions that create change and turn your dreams into reality. 6. Encourages you to step out of your comfort zone and try something new. A different approach creates a different result. A different result = change. 7. Keeps you motivated and looking forwards, which is what LifeCoaching is all about. Therapy heals the past. LifeCoaching designs the future. Your future. And that’s exciting. 8. Celebrates your successes as you move towards the life you desire. 9. Is trained and qualified to coach.
A quick search on google will show you that there are lots of different types of coaches: divorce coaches, career coaches, relationship coaches, transition coaches, mindset coaches, wellness coaches, business coaches, executive coaches, parenting coaches, motivational coaches. The list goes on. I call myself a LifeCoach because I trained to be a LifeCoach with The Coaching Academy. And the LifeCoaching process of getting clarity around what’s really important; setting meaningful and achievable goals; breaking them down into small, achievable steps; overcoming stumbling blocks along the way and staying motivated throughout the process by keeping your eye on the prize; works for everything. Whether you want to start a new business, embark on a round-the-world-adventure, change jobs, lose weight, develop more self confidence, join the dating scene or improve your existing relationships. And I know it works because my life changed as a result of the LifeCoaching I had in my late 30s/early 40s (read my story here). And it continues to change as I set myself new goals and go after them with a positive mindset and a sense of purpose and direction. So maybe the short answer to the ‘what is a LifeCoach’ question is this: a LifeCoach is someone who helps you identify and achieve your goals and lead a happy and fulfilling life.
