As Wimbledon is on TV – and as I’ve watched most episodes of Netflix’s ‘Breakpoint’ series – I’ve been reading about the tennis mindset. Here are some of the tips that stood out for me because they apply to everyone who has a goal they want to achieve – whether it’s a better work-life balance, a new career, a physical challenge (running the marathon, etc), launching a new business or winning Wimbledon. 1. Find comfort in discomfort. Nerves aren’t a sign of weakness, they’re a sign that you’re progressing towards your goal. Steve Tignor 2. Remember your successes. According to Jonathan Fader, PhD in Psychology Today, “It’s not just positive thinking that helps … it’s positive statements that are true. ‘I’ve succeeded in this situation before’ is a more effective self-statement than ‘I can do this’. 3. Keep thinking. Stay in the present and remain focussed on what you can do next. Have a plan. 4.: “Train your mind to be able to accept that something can go wrong,” says Performance Psychologist Roberto Forzoni. Prepare for that. Go through the scenarios and possible responses. 5. Celebrate your successes. According to Dr Alexandra Guhde, “Negative experiences imprint on our brains far more powerfully than positive [ones].” That’s why it’s so important to remember and celebrate our successes. Achieving big goals isn’t easy. Tennis players have managers, coaches, trainers, physios, psychologists, mental coaches and the crowds to provide them with practical and emotional support. I had a LifeCoach to help me achieve mine. I didn't want to win Wimbledon but my personal and business goals were just as important to me. If you think I could help you achieve yours, just give me a call. In the meantime, I’m rooting for Carlos Alcaraz and Ons Jabeur. Carlos says he “believes all the time” and stays “focussed all the time” and Ons has said she is “working on [herself] like crazy”. Here's hoping they lift the trophy this year. If they don't, I'm sure they won't give up on their dream. Don't give up on yours!
